Long Live the Consumer

Uncategorized — nibaq on December 13, 2004 at 9:45:19

This is a great article: This Magazine: The Rebel Sell about consumerism, the concept of logos,
branding and advertising and that we really just love to buy.

Here is a snippit from it:

Once we acknowledge the role that distinction plays in structuring consumption, its easy to see why people care about brands so much. Brands dont bring us together, they set us apart. Of course, most sophisticated people claim that they dont care about brandsa transparent falsehood. Most people who consider themselves anti-consumerist are extremely brand-conscious. They are able to fool themselves into believing that they dont care because their preferences are primarily negative. They would never be caught dead driving a Chrysler or listening to Celine Dion. It is precisely by not buying these uncool items that they establish their social superiority. (It is also why, when they do consume mass society products, they must do so ironicallyso as to preserve their distinction.)

Whats in My Car’s CD Magazine

My Theme for my current selection is Space. I also arranged them in order:

The Polyphonic Spree - Begining Stages Of….

This is the starting point. I love this band, their leader and lead singer was from Tripping Da
isy. So when I first heard them on the radio I thought it was some unreleased stuff from them, but it
was way different. The “band” is over 30 people and seeing them live in a small stage is amazing. They
are filled with sound of music and vocals that just energize you and have you sing a long. Dont miss
this band before they start filling stadiums.

Warm Jets - Future Signs

Here we have take off. I remeber hearing their one song on the radio once and just got the cd a
nd it grows on you. With a blurry/dirty guitar sound and vocal/lyrics that just get you. Cant think of
other words to describe them, you really have to listen to them.

Spiritulized - Live at Albert Hall

We reached space. This is really one of the greatest live albums ever. Just the energy and musi
c captures you. If you are a fan of Pink Floyd, the Doors and Phish then get this album. It will take
you on a 2 cd live set of just pure music.

SpaceHog - Resident Alien

Something to do as we get there. I really love this band and album. It just glam and brit rock,
but they couldn’t make it in England so went to New York instead. This I think one of my oldest cds.
I got them back in 95/96 and loved them back then as much as I do now. Still remeber most of the lyric
s.

AIR - Moon Safari

Reaching the destination. Really one of the greatest albums ever, if I have to explain why, the
n you got some wrong with you.

Urban Exploring

One thing I love to do in Kuwait is go exploring. True that I am Kuwaiti and lived here most of my lif
e there are parts of Kuwait that I rarely visit, and even just know about. One place that I just love
to go to is Kuwait City.

Kuwait City is really a gem when you get out of your car and just walk around and see what your a miss
ing. You really feel that whole city life, with the sub way that we have and the shops and people ther
e.

It is really a shame that so many Kuwaitis dont go there and have let so many buildngs go to waste and
disarray. I really hope the rumors I hear that there is going to be a revival there. That those old h
ousing areas will be torn down and new ones being put up. This would be great being able to live there
and just walk down the street to work.

One other thing I hope they do is area called “blockata” where there cloth stores are. It really is a
nice area. Reminds me of the centers of Italian/Spanish and French cities. Easily that place can be am
azing just have some coffee shops and restaurants around the edge, clean up the sourounding area and m
ake more parking spots for people. And there you go.

There really lots of amazing things to do to the city and I think to curb the traffic problem is to br
ing more people to live there. You would cut down the commute to a lot of people and bring new life to
the city.

VW Dreams

Uncategorized — nibaq on December 9, 2004 at 15:14:16

I have strange dreams in life. One of them is for a honey moon that involves getting a VW Westfalla and just crusising around Europe for a good month or 2 visiting all the countries, leaving and staying when we felt like it (I also think it is the ultime litmus test. If you can live with that person within that confin ed space for a week without killing each other your marrige will last a lifetime). So seeing this concept VW Westfalla just makes me drool.

My other dream in life also involves a VW Bus. like putting a Porsche engine in one.

Doldrums

Been in a sort of doldrums lately. Just feel out of touch, like my head isn’t screwed on right.

Like that old saying goes:

Do nothing and nothing will happen. Do something and something will happen
