Sham-crap

Like Symbols I saw the MBC ad for the Simpsons aka (Shamsooms) in Arabic and have to say it is going to be just crap.

First that it is going to be in Ramadan, so all those episodes where Homer (Omar) is drinking beers (which is like a majority of them), or going to Moes and such will most likely be gone. So dont expect the Flaming Moes episode, or this:

Homer: Got any of that beer that has candy floating in it? You know, Skittlebrau?
Apu: Such a beer does not exist, sir. I think you must have dreamed it.
Homer: Oh. Well, then just give me a six-pack and a couple of bags of Skittles.

or Barney

Barney: Hmm… someone spillt beer into this ashtray!

Then you have the ones involving the church and God. That will go of well I am sure during Ramadan, so those are going to be gone. Might as well say good bye to Rev. Lovejoy.

Rev. Lovejoy: Get a divorce.
Helen: Hmm, hmm.
Marge: Isn’t that a sin?
Rev. Lovejoy: Marge, everything is a sin. (holds out Bible) Have you ever sat down and read this thing? Technically, we’re not allowed to go to the bathroom.

How about Flanders?

“Hi-diddly-ho, neighbors!”

How the hell are they going to translate that?

Or this great quote:

Mr Burns: Oooh, so Mother Nature needs a favor?! Well maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys! Nature started the fight for survival, and now she wants to quit because she’s losing. Well I say, hard cheese.

That is classic Simpson’s dialoge having that translated if possible will just ruin the whole flow of it!

Seriously there are certain shows that shouldn’t be over dubbed to Arabic and just definately not Egyptian dialect. Look at the Japanese cartoons they would show us in the 80s, they didn’t have any certain dialect to them. They were straight up Arabic so that everyone could understand and appreciate. I am sure the effort the people who made this show to translate it to Arabic could have made a good orignal show about an Egyptian family living in Egypt, dealing with religon, life and work and trying to keep a family together. That way they can prouldly say made in Egypt, instead of Made in USA assembled in Egypt.

  1. this show is going to kick as in egyptian dude. It will be hillarious! The egyptian dialect is the funniest especially if they exagerate it.

  2. If they got a bunch of funny writers and redid the show .. it would be hilarious. I am expecting shitty translation and an embarassment to everything Matt Groening worked towards.

  3. i was telling nibaq that it would be really cool if they went like typical egyptian. I wouldnt call Homer Omar for example, I would call him Fahmi or Raouf. Moe can be Mamdou7, Marge could be Sharehan or Riham. Abu could be Ismaeel, Chief Wiggum can by Captain 7anafee. Lisa can be Sawsan. I think this show might turn out funnier then in English hehe.

  6. The Simpsons in Arabic

A few days ago while watching MBC, they were showing some of the stuff they’ll be airing in Ramadhan, which is just around the corner now, and to my surprise an Arabic version of “The Simpsons” is in the schedule. It will be called “Al Shamshoon” …

  7. The Simpsons in Arabic

I saw the publicity for the dubbed Arabic version of the Simpsons and I am not sure how I feel about it. The show is definitely a challenge to translate but what other translation isn’t a challange. I just hope that in the process of traslating/adapting this great show it does not get watered down to a bunch of stupid jokes and shallow commentary that Egyptian TV programming has accustomed us to ever since the Arab world discovered television.
And having Heneidi do the voice of Homer is a disturbing first sign…
