Lean Back

We were always told to sit up straight and keep a good posture by our teachers and elders when younger. Well thanks to science proving everything bad for you is good seems that sitting up straight is BAD for your back!

When strain is placed on the spine, the spinal disks start to move and misalign. At a 90-degree sitting position, this movement was most prominent. The disks were least moved when subjects were sitting back at a 135-degree sitting position.

-New Advice: Don’t Sit Up Straight

So lean back in that chair move that car seat to geezee style and just relax.

  4. My doctor showed me a graphic about the pressures exerted on the spine while in different postures; in it, the graphic shows:

    The pressures exerted are:

    - when lying down flat on ones back, the pressure exerted is 25%
    - it goes up to 75% when lying on your side
    - 100% when standing
    - 150% when sitting “properly”
    - 200% when slightly slouching
    - a staggering 300% when slouching completely

I’ve got to scan it and upload it somewhere.

I can vouch for the research you mentioned in that the best way to sit is to lie back at 135% with a small cushion under your knees… which is how I have been forced to sit for the last 3 weeks and counting!
