Bloggers vs Journalists

This is a time lapse of the Kuwait Towers with storm clouds slowy brewing.

Whats fascinates me is the sun moving across and damn is it bright.

This is an old long debate that even the word blogger is not limited to just blogs anymore. So seeing this article Literary Lesson: Authors, website Poets Write the News where the Haaretz decided to send their 31 journalists and replace them with writers, poets and authors.

The TV review by Eshkol Nevo opened with these words: “I didn’t watch TV yesterday.” And the weather report was a poem by Roni Somek, titled “Summer Sonnet.” (“Summer is the pencil/that is least sharp/in the seasons’ pencil case.”)

What it did was create a different interpretation of the news. Journalists are trained to provide data, they can’t offer an opinion on what occurred or even interfere. They are observers, their paid job is to simply report and, in essence, find the truth of the matter; and by printing it they allow the readers to decide. Bloggers, like writers and poets, don’t follow the journalist decorum. First off they aren’t paid to be unbiased since this isn’t a paying job. They simply interpret the data they get from journalists and offer it in a different light by attaching emotion, or making it abstract so that it is transformed into something that moves the reader passionately.

This is usually where the trouble begins: the reader gets motivated by the bloggers’ writing based on the journalists’ effort – wherein the blogger gets most of the credit, even though the blog post has a link to the original article. This ends up with newspapers calling bloggers parasites for stealing their hits and ad revenue. Yet it is a symbiotic relationship.

Newspapers have to catch up with what the reader wants and offer both. Simply put: make it a competition between bloggers to have their interpretation of the journalistic alongside the main article. How this would work is quite simple. The main journalist’s article is published and a select group of bloggers will interpret the the news and submit their posts to the editor to be placed next to the article. What happens here is that newspapers gets the best of both worlds and don’t lose their ad revenue from external hits. The added benefit for the bloggers is that they get paid for this.

One caveat is that I don’t see this as an up voting system that creates a competition based on fan base. I leave this for the editor of the paper to create their own system and rules. It is their job to manage the paper and offer the reader the best commentary.

Lets Get Personal

Got some extra cash to spend? Or looking for that great deal then check out Jungle Crazy. They list Amazon.com products with atleast 70% discount.

I already picked up some talk radios for $9.99 and they got some other great deals and for really dirt cheap prices.

I just called a friend of mine in the US. I haven’t seen him in ages, sildenafil and well I dont recall the last time I even heard his voice, psychiatrist yet I still keep tabs on him via messaging, SMSes and other online stuff. Yet I never thought of calling him, so I called him tonight.

And it felt good.

Which got to me thinking that all this crazy internet stuff that we have been using in terms of social interaction via blogs, flickr, social networks and such were great when we had a limited community that we interacted with and it was a great way to keep the extended one some what connected.

Then slowly the community that we interact with regularly joins this extended one in terms of communication and interaction. Dont get me wrong it is great being able to know that your friends are still alive and well and doing stuff, but isn’t it better to contact them and actually have a one on one conversation on what they are doing.

What we put up online isn’t what really goes on in our lives. We sugar coat it and put some rose color glasses on it, and still it just 10% of what really goes on in our lives.

So I believe that all this extended communication is going to go soon. Well not really just go away, but be less of an active presence in our lives. We are actually going to contact people and go back to having individual conversations. It is time we got personal with the people we care about and not just keeping them at an arms length.

The Interview

As some have already mentioned I was part of a interview for KTV1 that should be shown sometime in April. I apologize for not telling people about it before hand since I didn’t want to jinx it and decided to keep it under wraps until the show was taped.

The interview can be easily summed up as intro to Kuwait Blogging and the blogging scene in general. We were mostly asked one by one on blogging, ask how we started, disease what we wrote and then it dove more into the political/social aspect of it in Kuwait and the world.

The show took over an hour to tape, abortion but it will be cut down to around an hour. So we will see what happens with the editing and everything.

It really didn’t give us a chance to get going and really discuss a lot of the stuff that we could have. That was occurred later during dinner. We had a really lively discussion then about everything it was a great experience having such wonderful, inspirational people around talking openly about what they see in the world in terms of problems and solutions.

I really wanted to have the cameras around for that talk for I am sure it would inspire a lot of people. (Could be a good idea for a show, “Dinner Talk” having people talk during a meal).

So what to expect from this? Well nothing much really in terms of a huge jump or rise in the blogging scene in the short term. It will be a great catalyst for long term things in the future. Just like any blog’s first post. It usually is never read and missed, but the later ones are read by more and more people.

I Believe in a a Better Bluetooth Headset

I have issues with bluetooth headsets. I really do enjoy them when I am in the car or at work for it really great to have your hands free to drive, surgery
and write notes respectively. Yet my main issue with them is I really hate wearing my headset when I am walking around or with people and it is not in use. It feels awkward and also in my opinion rude and ugly. The only options for it is to either use one of those necklace type holders or put it in your pocket, no rx
which makes it cumbersome to remove and well use.

Well I have a solution, a watch type system. Basically you have this bracelet that allows for the bluetooth headset to remain in an area for quick access and some headsets have a screen on them to show you who is calling so you can even get that information from it. One other feature is that it can also function as a watch.

This way you can simply wear it around your wrist as a watch and as soon as you receive a call you just remove it and place it in your ear then when done return it.

I was taught to look at the process and not the final product, click see how something is created developed and where ideas are formed into a set process to give the final answer or product.

Yesterday I was given a puzzle, stuff it was a simple one. I had a square with 9 boxes inside, discount rx and the puzzle was that vertically, horizontally, and diagonally all had to equal 15 using only the numbers between 1-9 once.

My method to solve it was concise and methodical, first figure out what numbers shouldn’t be there, then figure out which of the remainder would equal 15. Then the number that was repeated the most would be in the middle.

It took a bit of jotting down but figured it out, I was especially proud of myself on how I solved it and not that I solved it, cause I broke down the problem to its core.

Today I should someone that same puzzle and they found it out a totally different way. In a lot quicker time I might add and even a different solution to the same problem. I was really impressed and amazed and learned something from it. Even thought I do admit at first I was trying to coach them, but then just shut up and let them do their own thing.

So when you see someone doing something differently don’t question the final product, but see the process. They will get to the end eventually and you could learn something different.

Old draft wrote it in May 18 2005 at 12:02 figured should publish itThe New York Times is going to paid subscribtion service for their op-ed and news columnists. So all you Friedman fans will have to pay to read his articles now.
It is a strange week, illness just after CNN removed their subscrition service, info and LA times did the same just earlier this year, website like this NY Times has to go backwards.
I dont know who is going to pay for this service, cause I know I won’t. Salon tried the subscrition service route for their premium content and just kept losing money and they didn’t get a profit til they they removed that divide. Now they still have subscriber service but that just removes ads and gives a couple extra perks.
The problem with the internet and subscrition service is that people dont like to pay for something they can’t hold or own in their hand especially when they are just going to read it for 5 minutes when they are sitting on a computer. When people buy magazines and news papers its not just for the content but the portablity of it. I can access the internet on my phone and read websites, but I still buy magazines cause I can take it with me anywhere and easily share it with my friends.
What the NY Times needs to do is what I told Salon create a printable version of their content in a magazine form. And now with syndicated feeds becoming more popular you can create your own news paper. Imagine picking and choose what you read in a paper and have it printed in the morning like a podcast and take it with you.

Today is not my day. Last night at diwaniya we wanted to see the C-Span Boodai interview either transcript of video. I did a couple searches and couldn’t only find the C-Span Archive Program page, more about with an option to order it for $29.95. Since I couldn’t find it and it had some merit on finding out the truth I ordered it.

As soon as I order it. I see that is available on YouTube (people need to tag and describe their files better). Then I check my phone and see an sms from my friend with the website of Jboodai.com where the whole thing is available as a download!

So annoyed and pissed that I spent that money, cause it has no real merit. It is not like a movie that I can forget about and see it later, or a book. I guess once I get it I will donate it to a university library or something. They could make some use of it in their catalog.

You know there is a lesson to be learned here. Just pirate movies and dvds. It really isn’t worth buying them, cause once you buy it you will find it available for free online.

Saudi Jeans is reporting that: Saudi Arabia is reducing fuel prices!. This is really a strange twist with the whole world increasing fuel prices, ambulance Saudi decreases there.

This quote from the Saudi Press Agency really has me worried:

[R]educing petrol prices for consumers in the Kingdom to improve the standards of citizens’ living.

For reducing fuel prices by 25-30% can either mean two things.

  • The standard of living is low that people are either eating dinner, human enhancement or putting gas in their car.
  • That this is an economic strategy to increase consumer spending in the country
  • Either one is having my brain wave all sorts of red flags. I recall my trip to Saudi back in Sept 2004 and was talking to this Saudi guy and he was telling me of his financial struggles. I guess this is King Abduallah’s quick fix for the situtation.

I mentioned ages ago about end of blogging and how it is going to be from an active role in your life to a more pasive one. Well here is the first wave of this.

Now your XBOX360 gaming can have it’s own blog on360voice.com which pull it’s data from your XBOX Live gamertag

The blog that is created is really informative in an entertaining way.

Here is some examples from Major Nelson

Keeps track of the games he played and their scores

Major Nelson’s Xbox – 05/01/06

Major Nelson rocked out with 3392 points. He played Battlefield 2: MC, find Bankshot Billiards 2, and Marble Blast Ultra, ampoule as well as basked in the glow of my great blade navigation interface!

Maybe he decided to listen to some music instead

Major Nelson’s Xbox – 04/29/06

Good thing I have access to Major Nelson’s entire MP3 collection streamed off his computer. It keeps me busy on days like yesterday when he never shows up to game.

Or simply do nothing

Major Nelson’s Xbox – 04/27/06

Yesterday, Major Nelson decided to spend his time elsewhere… machines don’t feel lonely… really we don’t…

This is just the begining, already the Nokia N93 will have the ability to upload pictures straight to Flickr or blog to Typepad via Nokia’s Life Blog.

More and more life is getting Syncdicated.

There are not more archives for this blog, troche its now simply content. It has been bothering me for a long time the whole concept of archives. I just dont like that feeling of the word, to me it means old buried, and forgotten. The internet has changed our view of information and the ability to access it via search engines, socail bookmarks etc. Nothing is forgotten or put a away it is always there ready to be accessed.

This is mostly steming on how I am defining the world.

I see the world in 3 defined groups: content, resources, and rules.

Basically resources is the place which holds/creates/provides the content based rules provided.

Just some thoughts on the recent stock fall that we been having

  • The 200kd that was given over a year ago, prothesis
the multiplier effect has worn off
  • Restructuring of the consumer loans in Kuwait

There are other thoughts, but it requires the use of charts of graphs. So gather among yourselves and discuss these concepts.

Well in Lebanon the plane trip was annoying. It has been a while since I flown Kuwait Airways and remembered why after this. Luckily I am returning via MEA so will avoid this mess.

Strange thing about this trip I am not brining my MP3 player. I was contimplating it when I was packing and decided against it. Not sure what to put on it and really didn’t think I will be listening to it at all.

Books:

  • Jennifer Government: Pretty cool book, here reminds me of Snow Crash but has this tinge to it that I am enjoying.
  • Counter-BlastI got this at the last second McLauhan is a visionary in terms of ways of communication where it is headed. I been thinking a lot of the future of communication and interaction lately ao wanted to catch up on his writings to get a better perspective of it all.
  • Vintage Maurakami I got this book ages ago but just haven’t had time to start reading it, buy or will start the first page and just put it down. I started reading one of the stories on the plane and really dove deep in his writings. Their is some rich imagery and feelings. This will be a real joy in reading.

The only electronic thing I am carrying with me is my phone and my bluetooth keyboard to write with. I rarely use it but its good to have when I need it. I much rather write in my trusty yellow notepad that I always carry with me. Like a camera. I decided to take my Minolta on this trip easy simple camer and a nice lens. The only problem is that I dont have any film! I went to the airport duty free and they dont keep any more regular film! It is a travesty! I hope to pick some up from the hotel bookstore thing tomorrow morning.

I really want to take pictures of Lebanon. It look so scenic when we were landing that I want to see more of it. Tomorrow we are going to the mountains so that will be exciting and want to get some pictures there, but really want to get a feel for the city and the mix of old and new.

Just got done with some great sking. It really feels great to be back on the slopes again. We got an instructor to guide us for the mountains and well he been teaching us some great stuff. I haven’t have an someone to teach me to ski in a while, symptoms and haven’t skied in over a year so it was very helpful. It was all about flow and well letting your skis take over and move you, approved instead of you forcing to move them. It took a while for me to get mind wrapped around the idea of just letting go.
It took the whole day but by the end I had it down. I was carving down the mountain in full speed with just slight tilt of the knee to the left and right for movement. It felt great just to speed down and move. I just love that feeling. That flow of the whole body moving in a rythem. No thought, just body and flow it is a wonderful feeling just to relax for it and feel that heat in your body and the cold wind on your face.
Tonight to Beirut and burn up downtown. Aiming for that Dunkin Donuts experience I keep hearing about

Had a great night out in Beirut, buy more about just no time to post about it. So the rumors of my return are false. I got picked up by my friend and headed down to the CV for some dinner and a good time. I really enjoy driving around the city and even walking in it just the mix of shapes and colors in the buildings and the feeling of life you get from them really wonderful. This feeling also exists in the inside of these buildings.
We headed to Mono [sp?] street and found some hole in the wall pub an djust hanged out for a while. It is really great to have one street just dedicated to the pubs and such, ailment makes it easier to find friends and other places to go when one is full or just not the right feeling. While at the pub some old friends came and also met some new ones. It was one fun time trading stories and singing a long to the music and recounting history. Also I got to experience the famous Lebanese dancing on the bar ritual. The song was Time goes by – Madonna and since I am sucker for peer pressure I hopped on their with my friend and just went at it. I also would like to take this time to thank all the strippers I’ve seen in action for teaching me how to pole dance. I really couldn’t have done it without them.
After that we decided it was time to go dancing! So we headed out ot BO18, unhealthy which is spectacular. I also always heard of this place and their roof and to get to see it and with the roof open was really great. We had a great time there just dancing the rest of the night away. I was in a different state, just with my circle of new and old friends and that was my world. The rest of the club really didn’t exist We were just having such a good time.
I dont remember when I got back home since I didn’t have to drive up that mountain road, I was just out of it. I was so tired and slept all the way up and sleep walked to my hotel room. I was just gone. All I recall is that as soon as I hit the bed my brother started this broken record telling me to wake up. Out of spite I stayed in bed. I really needed to go to the bathroom but didn’t move out of the bed. If it is war he wanted, war he got.
That was a quiet day, saw friends up in the slopes and had a really good grease bomb of a burger.
Today in Beirut and wandered around the Solidare, really need to get lost here. I love getting lost in a city and just taking pictures and observing the people and how they integrate with the architecture. You get such a wonderufl feel for the place that way. You understand it better. The reaon for the people’s actions and if that is based on the souroundings, or that that souroundings affect the people.
One cool thing for Lebanon history is I saw the “Prophet and Gibran” play.
More exploring tonight and tomorrow. Friend recommended this place called Basement and that seems to be chill to hang out and take it easy.

One cool thing for Lebanon history is I saw the “Prophet and Gibran” play.

so figure its a good time to post. It is amusing to tell people you walk to places in Lebanon. We walked from the hotel to this place called Basement. Got bad directions s owe wandered around, order crossing traffic and then we find out that it is closed, approved
so we have to walk back to Virgin. Then just said screw it and since it was Sunday off to Mono St. We saw a place that had kareoke and was going to attend it but I really need to use the bathroom so went to this one that was empty.
One thing I didnt go in to detail about yesterday was the play “Gibran and the Prophet”.
Like most plays it gives a zeitgeist of the feeling and thoughts of a nation. I always read Rampurples posts and she keeps me updated with news of Lebanon but really I never understood what was it all about. I saw her passoin, loyalties and thoughts in the subject. She would recount stories of the villages she visited, the people she would meet and the lifestyle there. Yesterday it all made sense with Gibrans You have Your Lebanon, and I have Mine.

Seems everyone leaving Kuwait this holiday. Have fun, geriatrician
be safe & avoid the Gulf Road.

Back in Kuwait. Weather is strange in the airport saw the mix of winter and summer. Guess we “Shayfee” weather again.

On the way back my brother was giving us a tour of Kuwait just like our drive did for Lebanon and was giving places Lebanese sounding names. I told him we are in Kuwait we dont have cool names for places they are all named after Al-Sabah or another. So we started adding “Al-Sabah” to all those Lebanese places.

Solidare Al-Sabah
Fraya Mubarak Al-Sabah
Shareg Mono Ahmed Al-Sabah

You’d think with all our history, healing and people we could come up with much cooler names for areas and streets. I think we should name some areas after famous shipping boats from the trader years. Cause one thing about naming stuff after one name structure is that it gets really confusing giving directions to those places.
