What Happened to Safat?

Maletti Pizza in London – Soho really dont like you using your cellphone while waiting in line. I wonder how long this would last in Kuwait before someone would get stabbed in the face.

I am sorry for the 24 hour downtime with Safat basically the code that runs it was taking too much CPU and database time at my host Dreamhost; who sent me this nice email:

Hello, ask
Queries against your kwblogswp were once again causing incredibly high loads on your database server ‘scar’. Because of this I have been forced to disable access to your database. Please optimize your queries for performance and optimize your code to perform as few queries as possible. Once you’ve done that, abortion we can re-enable access to your database. However, please keep in mind that if we have to disable access to your database again, it will be permanent. We simply cannot continue to allow one person to cause problems for a large number of people.

Thanks!
Jeremy

So they took it down and took a long while for them to bring it back up again. Luckily I had other options and get greg up.

What to expect in the future? Well it means I need to tweak some settings, but doubt it will do any major change or move to a dedicated server or a better shared hosting plan. Still checking out options and waiting for Dreamhost to reply back to another email to help reduce the load.

The Interview

As some have already mentioned I was part of a interview for KTV1 that should be shown sometime in April. I apologize for not telling people about it before hand since I didn’t want to jinx it and decided to keep it under wraps until the show was taped.

The interview can be easily summed up as intro to Kuwait Blogging and the blogging scene in general. We were mostly asked one by one on blogging, ask how we started, disease what we wrote and then it dove more into the political/social aspect of it in Kuwait and the world.

The show took over an hour to tape, abortion but it will be cut down to around an hour. So we will see what happens with the editing and everything.

It really didn’t give us a chance to get going and really discuss a lot of the stuff that we could have. That was occurred later during dinner. We had a really lively discussion then about everything it was a great experience having such wonderful, inspirational people around talking openly about what they see in the world in terms of problems and solutions.

I really wanted to have the cameras around for that talk for I am sure it would inspire a lot of people. (Could be a good idea for a show, “Dinner Talk” having people talk during a meal).

So what to expect from this? Well nothing much really in terms of a huge jump or rise in the blogging scene in the short term. It will be a great catalyst for long term things in the future. Just like any blog’s first post. It usually is never read and missed, but the later ones are read by more and more people.

Kuwait Blogs under the Microscope

If you recall a couple months ago we were all asked to do a survey by Noor Ali-Hasan for help on her thesis. Well I am happy to say that she has finally posted it: Analyzing the Social Patters and Behaviors Associated with Blogrolls and Blog comments.

I casually glanced through it this morning and have to say if it some fascinating stuff. She compares our Kuwait blogosphere, drug with UAE’s and Dallas Fortworth/Texas (DFW) and has come up with some interesting observations on the data.

While I was reading it I couldn’t help getting this feeling that I was on a psychologists couch asking if I have sexual thoughts about gophers as Noor is smoking a cigar.

I am really happy about this paper for it gives Kuwait Blogs a stronger identity by defining our interactions. One thing that I found intriguing in the study, buy more about is that we had more similarities to the DFW blogosphere compared to the UAE one. I think they could be due to the homogeneity of our blogospheres.

It is a strange week, illness just after CNN removed their subscrition service, info and LA times did the same just earlier this year, website like this NY Times has to go backwards.
I dont know who is going to pay for this service, cause I know I won’t. Salon tried the subscrition service route for their premium content and just kept losing money and they didn’t get a profit til they they removed that divide. Now they still have subscriber service but that just removes ads and gives a couple extra perks.
The problem with the internet and subscrition service is that people dont like to pay for something they can’t hold or own in their hand especially when they are just going to read it for 5 minutes when they are sitting on a computer. When people buy magazines and news papers its not just for the content but the portablity of it. I can access the internet on my phone and read websites, but I still buy magazines cause I can take it with me anywhere and easily share it with my friends.
What the NY Times needs to do is what I told Salon create a printable version of their content in a magazine form. And now with syndicated feeds becoming more popular you can create your own news paper. Imagine picking and choose what you read in a paper and have it printed in the morning like a podcast and take it with you.

Just want to share two things that are going on in the Arabosphere:

  • Boycott Batelco

Batelco has revised the Broadband Internet (ADSL) packages so that there aren’t any more unlimited usage packages. This means you will be charged extra the more you use your Internet connection, pharmacy
with no option to pay a flat fee.

  • Free Alaa

On Saturday (May 7), Alaa was arrested with a group of activists during a peaceful demonstration outside a Cairo courthouse. The rally denounced disciplinary hearings for two reform judges and arrests of protestors at previous demonstrations. Alaa and a group of other demonstrators were cornered by Egyptian police, and security agents then apparently handpicked individual protestors for arrest.

  • It is interesting to see how other countries to compare them to your own.

Today is not my day. Last night at diwaniya we wanted to see the C-Span Boodai interview either transcript of video. I did a couple searches and couldn’t only find the C-Span Archive Program page, more about with an option to order it for $29.95. Since I couldn’t find it and it had some merit on finding out the truth I ordered it.

As soon as I order it. I see that is available on YouTube (people need to tag and describe their files better). Then I check my phone and see an sms from my friend with the website of Jboodai.com where the whole thing is available as a download!

So annoyed and pissed that I spent that money, cause it has no real merit. It is not like a movie that I can forget about and see it later, or a book. I guess once I get it I will donate it to a university library or something. They could make some use of it in their catalog.

You know there is a lesson to be learned here. Just pirate movies and dvds. It really isn’t worth buying them, cause once you buy it you will find it available for free online.

Saudi Jeans is reporting that: Saudi Arabia is reducing fuel prices!. This is really a strange twist with the whole world increasing fuel prices, ambulance Saudi decreases there.

This quote from the Saudi Press Agency really has me worried:

[R]educing petrol prices for consumers in the Kingdom to improve the standards of citizens’ living.

For reducing fuel prices by 25-30% can either mean two things.

    • The standard of living is low that people are either eating dinner, human enhancement or putting gas in their car.
    • That this is an economic strategy to increase consumer spending in the country
    • Either one is having my brain wave all sorts of red flags. I recall my trip to Saudi back in Sept 2004 and was talking to this Saudi guy and he was telling me of his financial struggles. I guess this is King Abduallah’s quick fix for the situtation.

I have tons of pictures of friends that I dont see anymore. I guess it is those memories of them.

I found this page:The Saddest Thing I Own, look
where people post pictures and some text on “the saddest thing they own”.

I mentioned ages ago about end of blogging and how it is going to be from an active role in your life to a more pasive one. Well here is the first wave of this.

Now your XBOX360 gaming can have it’s own blog on360voice.com which pull it’s data from your XBOX Live gamertag

The blog that is created is really informative in an entertaining way.

Here is some examples from Major Nelson

Keeps track of the games he played and their scores

    Major Nelson’s Xbox – 05/01/06

Major Nelson rocked out with 3392 points. He played Battlefield 2: MC, find Bankshot Billiards 2, and Marble Blast Ultra, ampoule as well as basked in the glow of my great blade navigation interface!

Maybe he decided to listen to some music instead

    Major Nelson’s Xbox – 04/29/06

Good thing I have access to Major Nelson’s entire MP3 collection streamed off his computer. It keeps me busy on days like yesterday when he never shows up to game.

    Or simply do nothing

    Major Nelson’s Xbox – 04/27/06

Yesterday, Major Nelson decided to spend his time elsewhere… machines don’t feel lonely… really we don’t…

This is just the begining, already the Nokia N93 will have the ability to upload pictures straight to Flickr or blog to Typepad via Nokia’s Life Blog.

More and more life is getting Syncdicated.

    2.0 06

This is from Google Video and I laugh because it is true.

Well moved to WordPress 2.0 had some issues with plugins, see more about but thats just me not reading directions and well I got clutter up on this blog. I really dont like their update process really a hassle if you have other directories and structures that aren’t part of the blog.

Thinking of getting a new theme and set it up again with some other plugins and features. The one I am using was supposedly temp until I fixed colors and other stuff. I will look at some templates and see what is available, really main thing is to clean up the plugins and do a real update.
